Kingman, Arizona Doxol BLEVE
Просмотров 24 тыс.5 лет назад
Doxol Explosion: On July 5, 1973, in Kingman, Arizona, as liquified propane gas (LPG) was being off-loaded from a 33,500 gallon railcar tanker when a worker noticed a small leak in one of the connections. Normal practice was to strike the connection with a brass wrench in a way that tightened the connection. This time a normal wrench was used causing a spark, igniting the leaking propane gas. T...
Corvette Servo install for firmer shifts in Silverado, Sierra, and other GM vehicles.

You can install the servo that comes stock in the corvette into other GM vehicles with the 4l60e, 4l65e, and the 700r4 for firmer shifts, and 1.5 times more holding pressure which helps with longevity of transmission clutches while towing or under heavy load. Wow, my dad was a newly promoted sgt on DPS. We were behind the DPS station in a patrol car and saw this explode from a very short distance away. It melted the paint on fried the bugs into the windshield. I found out quickly that a DPS cruiser will do 60 mph in reverse. I was 6 at the time. Later in life I was a career firefighter and still think about this event everyday.

    I was remembering today that it is the 50th anniversary and thought everyone might want a little more insight of that day. My father was a photographer for the Kingman Daily Miner and also worked undercover narcotics for the Sheriff’s Department. He was next to an ambulance driver taking photos in close proximity when the tank car blew up. The driver suffered 40% burns and my dad by the grace of God, walked out with only a sunburn. The burned driver instructed my dad how to use the lights and sirens and he used the ambulance to drive many people to the hospital. Many victims lined the hospital walls. My dad had many nightmares and psychologically couldn’t get rid of the stinch of burned skin out of his mind. Interestingly, he did suffer internal injuries that were later determined to be caused from the explosion. He lived 12 years in chronic pain and agony. His organs had melted together (adhesion). Had most of his intestines removed and had a plastic stomach. Later contracted Pancreatitis. He was an amazing man. A decorated Air Commando and an instant friend to all those he met. He knew some of the other victims like Chris Sanders. It’s sad that by the time he spent a year in the hospital and 7 operations to separate his organs and follow ups, he found out too late about the lawsuit against Doxol/Droxol and received nothing from that which cost him his life and has not been recognized as one of the victims of this tragedy. Dad lost his battle at the young age of 43. I was almost 13 when this happened and was only blocks away hanging Scout-O-rama door knockers on people’s homes. When it blew up I was in the street and had direct view of the enormous fireball. I can never forget it… and how hot it was (on top of a hot summer day).

There were MANY true Heroes that day . The entire Town came together , bringing ice to the small Hospital , in some cases , transporting Burn Victims to the Hospital . Many Businesses were lost . I didn`t join KFD until a few years later . The Valor belongs to those on the Fireground that day . As horrible a tragedy as it was , countless lives have been saved as a result . Not much was really known about BLEVE`s at that time . The Volunteers responded as good Firefighters would have . Trying to put the wet stuff on the Red stuff . There were 3 Volunteer Firefighters actively fighting the Fire as best they knew how when it exploded . They were the local High School Principal , the Operations Manager of the local Utility Company and the local Bread delivery Man . The lessons learned from that day have been studied and applied to countless Fire Departments around the World and have saved countless lives . I attended the Ranger LP Gas Firefighting School in the early 80`s where we actually were Instructed on how to fight these Propane Tank Fires . Especially having seen what happened July 5 , 1973 , it was pretty unnerving as I`m sure you can guess , attacking Fires deliberately set on Propane Tanks . The servo applies pressure on the band, not the clutches. The band is a weak point and the extra pressure is achieved by making the center section smaller, giving the apply piston more surface area. The band applies in 2nd and O.D. or 4th. Notice that the center section of the servo moves independently from the outer piston. The outer piston is located inside the cap that you see from the exterior of the trans. The outer piston applies pressure on the band when in fourth gear. When the user installed this set up he would be increasing pressure on second gear band apply only. Sonnax has a larger outer piston to increase pressure in fourth gear as well. I mention that because the band is a weak link and it can slip in fourth as well as second. Given the fluid color of this transmission I would say you may very well have some band slipping going on. Obviously it is best to make this mode before that begins to happen.

    • @DerrickRG
      @DerrickRG 6 лет назад

      Michael Dose He mentioned in the description that the 700r4 needs the whole pin, why is that?

    • @michaeldose2041
      @michaeldose2041 6 лет назад

      The servo applies pressure on the band via the apply pin. GM has three different lengths of pins. It is critical that after installation of the servo that the travel is between .120 and .070 inches. That is measured by installing the servo and then pushing in on the cap from outside of the transmission until you can feel it bottom out. That is a little tricky to do because you are pushing against cushion spring behind a washer on the second gear apply. That is critical because 4th gear is being applied via the piston inside the cap. There is only about .250 of travel inside the cap, so you need to be sure it's inside that range to get full apply on 4th. 2nd on the other hand is using the bore in the case so it has much more travel available. If you fall below the lower limit you can grind the pin down. Sonnax has directions on how to do that using a washer as a circumference guide. Obviously if it needs to be longer you will need a different apply pin. Short question, long answer hope that helps. One more note if you are not modifying the outer cap and only changing the inner second gear (assuming a new band is installed) servo your clearance shouldn't change.

    • @splash5974
      @splash5974 6 лет назад

      So is it a bad idea to install a Corvette style servo on a trans wuthout building it first? You seem very knowledgeable, i ask because i would like to install a servo on my Sierra with the 4l60e. I find the trans pretty lazy between shifts, even at normal throttle position. Ive done a trans filter and replaced the fluid. I had the truck test driven by someone i know at the dealership, and they say its normal, and they are designed to slip slightly, in order to get a better driving experience. I say BS, and they probably do that so transmissions dont last over 10 years... Thank you

    Great video. Do you have to deactivate stabilotrak and put it in tow mode for the servo to work?

    • @imjeremy51
      @imjeremy51 6 лет назад

      Porfirio Hernandez Jr no, it firms up the shifts regardless. It just applies more pressure to the clutches. The tow mode and shutting off stabilitrack just changes the shift points, and doesn't automatically let off the throttle if the tires break loose.

    • @billmonroe8826
      @billmonroe8826 2 года назад

      @@imjeremy51 Actually it applies the band and holds it more firmer because the servo has a bigger area than the old. But since this was 3 yrs ago and by the looks of your fluid, you have probably overhauled the tranny by now as the 3-4 clutch is one of the weakest points in that transmission.

    The servo has more area for fluid to push on there by applying more force to the 2-4 band giving firmer shifts into 2nd and 4th. This is great for towing in overdrive.

    • @michaeldose2041
      @michaeldose2041 6 лет назад

      Actually that is incorrect. 4th gear is applied via the piston in the outer cap. If that is stock you are modifying second gear apply pressure only. Sonnax makes a different cap, which has a bigger inner bore, not a lot bigger because it is limited by the size of the case bore. When towing, don't be afraid to downshift on a hill and hold it in third gear. I believe GM designed this transmission to come out of 4th easily. Overheating occurs when the transmission shifts between 3rd and 4th excessively. In that case I just hold it in 3rd until I am back on level ground. Hey these things aren't idiot proof.
